Weight Management

It is never ok to overfeed your pet as they can become overweight. Be that as it may, we understand how easy it is to spoil your beloved pet. Unfortunately, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association states that more than 50% of pets are often overweight or obese. At Limestone City Animal Hospital, our job is to help you control your pet’s weight and keep them healthy. We focus on appropriate dieting, managing calories and creating an exercise plan to include in their lifestyle.

How do I know if my pet is overweight?

It might be difficult to figure out if your pet is overweight simply by looking at them. The best way to know if your pet is overweight is to have them see a veterinarian. Our veterinarian will assess them and determine if they are overweight or obese. If your pet’s weight is 20% over the ideal weight for their breed, we consider them obese. If we diagnose your pet with obesity we work with you to create a weight management plan. To find out if your furry friend is overweight give us a call at 613-542-5552.

What happens when my pet is obese?

When your pet is overweight it has a direct effect on their lifespan. Obese pets are more likely to develop illnesses. Our veterinarians often see obese/overweight pets suffering from:

  • Arthritis
  • Cardiac disease
  • Respiratory conditions like asthma
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Anesthesia complications

To prevent these conditions in your furry pal, we encourage you to reach out to the veterinarians at our hospital. By tackling your pet’s weight with a vet’s help you can extend their lifespan and increase the amount of happy years you have with them.
